Cerro Tronador and Ventisquero Negro
Full day from Bariloche to Cerro Tronador, the highest mountain in Nahuel Huapi National Park, with a stop at the Ventisquero Negro viewpoint.
Description
The road to Cerro Tronador crosses the southern half of Nahuel Huapi National Park, around 170 kilometres there and back. It follows the shores of Lake Gutierrez and Lake Mascardi, with roughly 35 kilometres of tarmac and 45 kilometres of gravel each way, and photo stops along the route.
The Ventisquero Negro is the main halt. It is a glacier buried under rock and sediment dragged down the mountain, which is what gives the ice its dark colour, seen from a viewpoint above the lagoon it feeds. From there the summit of Cerro Tronador, 3,478 metres and the highest in the park, and its hanging glaciers come into view.
The road then continues to the base of the mountain, with free time to have lunch and walk around before the return. In winter the park authority usually closes the stretch beyond the Ventisquero Negro, and the lunch stop is made at Pampa Linda instead.
