Cachi and the Cuesta del Obispo
Full day from Salta over the Cuesta del Obispo and through Los Cardones National Park to the village of Cachi, with a stop at the Valle Encantado.
Description
The road to Cachi climbs the Cuesta del Obispo, a switchback mountain route that reaches the Piedra del Molino at 3,348 metres. On the way up it passes the Valle Encantado, an area of eroded rock and high-altitude vegetation with viewpoints over the valley below.
The route then crosses Los Cardones National Park, where the landscape fills with cardon cactus, and runs along the Recta de Tin Tin, twenty kilometres of dead-straight road laid out on a pre-Hispanic track. The descent ends in Cachi, a village of dirt streets, whitewashed houses and a colonial church, with free time for lunch and a walk around the centre.
It is a full-day outing with long stretches of mountain road and sharp changes in altitude, so an unhurried pace and warm layers both help.
